How to Resize an Image Without Losing Quality

Resizing an image is easy — keeping it sharp is the part people get wrong. Here is how to resize photos and animated GIFs online without the dreaded blur.

How to resize an image

  1. Open the free Resize tool.
  2. Upload your image (GIF, PNG, JPG, WebP and AVIF all work).
  3. Enter the new width or height.
  4. Keep “Preserve aspect ratio” selected, preview, and download.

The golden rule: shrink, don’t stretch

Making an image smaller keeps it crisp. Making it larger than the original forces the software to invent pixels, which causes blur. If you must enlarge, do it in small steps and accept some softening.

Keep the proportions

Always preserve the aspect ratio unless you specifically need exact dimensions — otherwise the image looks squashed or stretched. Our tool locks the ratio for you by default.

Resizing animated GIFs

Every frame is resized together, so your animation keeps playing smoothly at the new size. Want a smaller file too? Convert it to animated WebP after resizing.

FAQ

Why does my image get blurry when resized?

Usually because it was enlarged beyond its original size, or the aspect ratio was ignored. Shrinking with the ratio locked avoids both.
